The past couple of weeks have been filled with work, learning, and more work.  I’m splitting my time between two farms, which keeps me out of trouble and gives me more than enough to do.  One of the farmers serves as the local Garst seed dealer.  This week we sorted through pallets of seed, restacked them for customers, then headed out to local farms for delivery.

Three days of throwing around fifty-five pound bags of corn seed would have been a great opportunity to take off a few pounds.  However, long days of work are ended with large meals and laughter.  No rice cakes here, just good old fashioned American fare, and lots of it.

Technology has always been of great interest to me, and an ongoing project has been to install a GPS steering system in the large four-wheel-drive tractor.  GPS is not new to farmers, they’ve been using it for over a decade as a guide to plant in long, straight rows.  The gizmo pictured above uses GPS to indicate field position, and provides the option to press a button and let it steer.  This week Gordie and I finished up the wiring and headed into the field to see if everything worked.  We hit the button, and watched with big grins as the electronics took over and steered the tractor.

It’s like a video game powered by diesel fuel, and the prize is corn.  It costs more than a quarter though…

Friday we had eight inches of snow on the ground.  We’ve enjoyed warm, spring days, and the radical change in the weather was a surprise.

Temperatures should be back to normal by Monday.  Warmer weather the next couple of days should melt the snow and provide us with a muddy, sticky mess in the fields.  Until things dry out, we will continue to laugh, eat just a little too much, and enjoy driving large John Deere tractors.

Next week I’ll take a few photos of the calf who has adopted me.  It’s somewhat unusual for a calf to adopt a human, but this young friend seems to enjoy my company.  From time to time I’ll climb over the fence just to visit with him.  He likes to bounce around and play, but he’s not catching on to the game of fetch.  Other calves shy away from human contact, but this guy strains against the fence for a little bit of lovin’.

Video Viewing

My Two Year Anniversary video is in Quicktime format, which some folks have difficulty playing. A simple remedy is to watch it at YouTube:

Two Years

April 7th will always be significant to me.

It was April 7, 2006 when I walked away from my career of over twenty years. I doubt I’ll ever forget descending the lobby stairs, carrying a small box that held the contents of my desk. Friends walked with me and wished me well, and sincerely hugged me good-bye. I was filled with an odd mixture of adrenaline and fear, but knew I was doing the right thing. I was starting over by taking a new path that would be filled with challenges. I let go of the traditional ‘Corporate America’ way of earning a living. I left behind the skill set I’d fine-tuned over two decades. I left behind office politics and the angry work atmosphere. I was sure I could do better somewhere else, even if I had to start over with a mop in my hand.

Two years later I look back and I’m stunned by what I’ve seen, who I’ve met, and all I’ve learned. I’m astonished that I walked away from a secure paycheck to work on a Merchant Marine ship. Leaving my career to take an entry-level job was an insane move backwards.

Having mopped plenty, and painted more, I can tell you it wasn’t crazy, it was perfect. I’ve learned that I love the wide-open spaces of the water, and I also enjoy the South Dakota landscape as seen from the cab of a tractor or a semi.

Combining at the end of the day

I’m constantly learning new skills, and daily I’m aware that life unfolds in new and surprising ways if I’ll simply let go and allow it to happen. The people I’ve met and the kindness I’ve experienced has made it a fantastic two years.

A short video summarizing my experiences is on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQL8hC4JUeo
