Quiet Morning

There’s something about a still morning on the farm.  The animals are relaxed and friendly, the breeze feels clean, and the quiet is endless.  I gave the Moogies their morning meal, and they were more playful and curious than usual.

There’s nothing like a big, wet nose as a morning greeting.  (Moogie 3)

Moogie 4 has been fighting an uphill battle since we brought him home.
Colostrum
(also known as
first milk or “immune milk”) contains all sorts of good stuff that builds the immune system.  It’s important that the calf have Colostrum within the first few hours of life, and we found him when he was a couple of days old.  Did he ever get that first meal from Mom?  We don’t know, but we’re guessing the answer is no.  He’s was very strong this morning; enjoying the morning sun and hanging out with the other calves.  When his bottle was empty, he grumbled and let out an abbreviated  moo that sounded more like a “hmph!”  A good appetite is a good sign.

Cultural Sharing

My friend John broadens my horizons by providing cultural experiences.  I met him when he was the project leader on a rebuild project.  Although we have very little in common, we’ve become good friends.  Today he invited me to stop by a tattoo parlor where he was having a Celtic symbol put on his leg.  I’ve never seen a tattoo in progress, so I grabbed my camera and arrived a few minutes after the process had begun.  John was shivering in pain.  He did not make a sound, but I could tell this was not a pleasurable event.

Don’t try this at home.

About half way through the process, one of John’s co-workers arrived to lend support.  Actually, I think he was just waiting for lunch.  In any case, his Cabellas hat and overalls provided a nice contrast to the decor of the shop.

After a while, I had the artist laughing and we enjoyed good conversation.  I learned about the different tools, techniques and inks, and a bit of his family history.  It was an educational experience, and I’m happy to report that John is just fine.  No limping, no regrets, no problems.  Am I tempted to get a tattoo?  No, but I have an appreciation for the art form and medical aspects involved in the craft.

Summer - Day One

Summer officially starts next week, but today was the perfect day at the lake.
I’d say we’re off to a great start.

Eric and Chris at the end of the day.

We sat around the fire and watched as the sun burned out on the horizon.  Nice.
